Project Purpose / Background

The CFRT program is designed to support beginning farmers and ranchers in Western Colorado by providing education, mentorship, land access, and business development resources. The initiative aims to enhance the social, economic, and environmental sustainability of new agricultural enterprises.

Objectives:

  • Deliver a comprehensive curriculum covering topics such as holistic management, irrigation, farm finance, business planning, and marketing.

  • Provide mentorship opportunities by pairing participants with experienced farmers and ranchers.

  • Facilitate land access through partnerships and support in lease agreements.

  • Foster community building and leadership skills among participants.

  • Ensure participants develop actionable business plans for their operations.

    Scope & Deliverables:

    • Conducted over 40 educational sessions, including workshops and seminars.

    • Established a mentorship program connecting over 30 participants with seasoned professionals.

    • Assisted in land access negotiations and agreements for several participants.

    • Organized community events and networking opportunities to strengthen the agricultural community.

    • Supported participants in creating detailed business plans and accessing necessary certifications.

    Tools & Methodologies Used: Microsoft Excel, Canva, social media and email marketing.

    Stakeholders: Farmers and ranchers with under 10 years experience, experienced agricultural professionals providing guidance and support, local agricultural organizations, landowners, and educational institutions, USDA, local residents and businesses benefiting from a strengthened local food system.

    Timeline: Program started in 2022, I came on in 2023 and the project lasted until fall of 2024.

    Outcomes / Results:

    • Achieved a 74% graduation rate among participants.

    • Engaged over 260 community members through educational events and workshops.

    • Facilitated land access for several participants, enabling them to establish or expand their operations.

    • Developed a network of over 30 mentors, enhancing the support system for new farmers and ranchers.

    • Contributed to the sustainability and resilience of the local agricultural community.

    Lessons Learned / Skills Demonstrated:
