This is Willie.
When we were kids, my parents sent my sisters and me to stay with my grandma for two weeks. Grandma was working as an in-home caretaker for an older woman in a house behind Clubbs in Delta, CO. Everything about this house drove my already active imagination wild. At night, I slept in a hospital bed in a spare room that was full of very graphic crucifixes, complete with one of those Mother Mary pictures that is made to look like she is watching you as you walk around the room.
And outside the door to that room sat Willie. An overweight and ancient chihuahua who snorted and who never seemed to close his bugged out eyes. His tongue had what looked like warts on it and it was too long for his mouth so it always hung out of his mouth. His eyes were clouded. Sometimes at night when I thought he was asleep I would creep through the house to the bathroom. And just when I thought it was all clear and that Willie must have been asleep I would turn on the bathroom light and as soon as the light turned on the snorting noises would start and Willie would creep out from behind the toilet!
I begged my parents until they came and got me a week early.
